Starting May 1, 2025, until August 1, 2025, the Scottish Ministers have implemented a series of temporary road restrictions across South West Scotland. These changes are crucial for planned roadworks, aiming to ensure the safety and efficiency of both the workers and road users.

What's Happening?

  1. Road Closures: Certain segments of the M77/A77, M8/A8, M74/A74(M), and other trunk roads will be temporarily closed. This will affect various slip roads and main carriageways, with closures indicated by specific traffic signs.

  2. Overtaking Ban: On designated sections of these roads, overtaking will be prohibited. This helps maintain smooth traffic flow and reduces the risk of accidents near construction zones.

  3. Speed Limit Reductions: Speed limits will be reduced in specific areas to either 30, 40, or 50 mph, depending on the road section. These reductions are marked by clear signage to guide drivers safely through the affected areas.

Key Affected Areas:

  • M77/A77 Glasgow – Stranraer Trunk Road: Notable restrictions from Meiklewood Interchange to Fenwick and beyond.
  • M8/A8 Edinburgh – Greenock Trunk Road: Changes between Junction 20 and Junction 22, among others.
  • M74/A74(M) Glasgow – Carlisle Trunk Road: Several sections will see speed reductions and overtaking bans.

Exemptions:

  • Emergency vehicles (fire brigade, ambulance, police, and coastguard) and vehicles involved in roadworks are exempt from these restrictions.

Alternate Routes:

The authorities have considered alternative routes to minimize disruption. Drivers are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance and follow the suggested detours.

Safety First:

These measures are crucial for ensuring the safety of road users and workers. Compliance with the new restrictions is mandatory, and failure to adhere may result in penalties.

Stay informed and drive safely as these temporary restrictions aim to enhance the region's road infrastructure. For detailed information on specific road sections and the exact nature of restrictions, refer to the official schedule or local traffic updates.
