New Toll Rates for Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Announced
In an important update for commuters and transport operators, the UK government has revised the toll rates for the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry, effective from April 28, 2025. This change follows an application by the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee and is aimed at updating the fees in line with current transport needs and infrastructure maintenance costs.
Tamar Bridge Toll Changes
For those crossing the Tamar Bridge from Saltash in Cornwall to Plymouth in Devon, the new toll rates are as follows:
- Solo Motorcycles: No charge, maintaining free passage for motorbike users.
- Motor Cars and Similar Vehicles: £3.00 per crossing.
- 2 Axle Vehicles Over 3.5 Tonnes: £7.30.
- 3 Axle Vehicles: £12.00.
- Vehicles with 4 or More Axles: £16.50.
Note: Tolls are only charged for eastbound travel.
For vehicles carrying abnormal loads, the tolls remain unchanged:
- Exclusive Use of One Lane: £50.
- Exclusive Use of Two Lanes: £100.
- Exclusive Use of More Than Two Lanes: £150.
These fees apply in both travel directions.
Torpoint Ferry Toll Changes
The Torpoint Ferry, which connects Torpoint in Cornwall to Plymouth in Devon, will see the following toll structure:
- Solo Motorcycles: £1.00, charged only when traveling westbound from Plymouth to Torpoint.
- Motor Cars and Similar Vehicles: £3.00, charged eastbound from Torpoint.
- 2 Axle Vehicles Over 3.5 Tonnes: £7.30.
- 3 Axle Vehicles: £12.00 (not currently carried).
- Vehicles with 4 or More Axles: £16.50 (not currently carried).
For abnormal loads on the ferry:
- Exclusive Use of the Ferry: £50 per crossing.
- Use of Multiple Ferry Lanes: £10 per lane in use.
These fees are applicable in both directions.
Key Points
- Trailers will incur tolls equivalent to the vehicle towing them.
- There are no changes to the charges for abnormal loads on either the bridge or the ferry.
- Current tolls remain outside the scope of VAT.
This revision marks an essential measure to ensure the sustainability and efficiency of these crucial transport links between Cornwall and Devon. Commuters and logistics companies should plan their routes and budgets accordingly to accommodate these changes.
