16 April 2025 at 3:03 am (Europe/London)

If you're planning to take to the skies over Edinburgh at the end of June, there's an important update you need to know. The UK government has announced a temporary restriction on flying in the area due to the upcoming Royal Week event. Here's a quick breakdown of what you need to know:

What's Happening and When?

From 8:00 AM on June 30th, 2025, to 3:00 PM on July 4th, 2025, a specific airspace around Edinburgh will be off-limits for most aircraft. The restricted area forms a circle with a 2 nautical mile radius, centered at coordinates 55°57'10"N 003°10'20"W, which covers a significant part of the city center.

Why the Restrictions?

The restrictions are being put in place to ensure public safety and security during Royal Week, a high-profile event expected to attract large crowds and dignitaries.

Who Can Still Fly?

Not all flights will be grounded. The following are exceptions:

  • Aircraft with permission from the Police Scotland Aviation Safety and Security Unit.
  • Flights approaching or departing from Edinburgh Airport under the guidance of air traffic control.
  • Aircraft operated by or for:
    • Police Air Support Units
    • The King's Helicopter Flight
    • Members of the Royal Family
    • Emergency Medical Services
    • The Maritime and Coastguard Agency for search and rescue operations.

Time Zone Alert

Remember, the times mentioned are in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which means they'll be one hour behind British Summer Time (BST).
