Starting May 1, 2025, several trunk roads across South East Scotland will experience temporary traffic changes due to essential roadworks. These changes, enforced by the Scottish Ministers under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, will affect road usage, overtaking, and speed limits on specified road sections. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect and how it might impact your travel.

Traffic Restrictions and Prohibitions:

  1. Road Closures: Some road sections will be temporarily closed. Look out for signs indicating closures and ensure compliance to avoid penalties. These signs will guide traffic around the obstructions.

  2. Overtaking Bans: Overtaking will be restricted on specific road stretches. Signs featuring the "no overtaking" symbol will be posted to inform drivers.

  3. Speed Limits Adjustments: Speed limits will be reduced on several road sections. The new limits will vary between 30 mph and 50 mph, depending on the road and ongoing works. Compliance is crucial for safety and to avoid fines.

Key Roads Affected:

  • M8/A8/A8(M) Edinburgh – Greenock Trunk Road: Notable reductions in speed limits, particularly between Junction 2 (Claylands) and Junction 3A (Starlaw).

  • M9/A9 Edinburgh – Stirling – Thurso Trunk Road: Both northbound and southbound lanes from Junction 1 (Newbridge) to Junction 10 (Craigforth) are affected with speed reductions to 40 mph.

  • A720 Edinburgh City Bypass: Expect speed limit changes between the Baberton and Hermiston Junctions.

  • A702, A6091/A7, A68, A985, and A977 Roads: Various sections on these roads will have speed limits reduced to 30 mph, particularly affecting travel through areas like West Linton, Galashiels, and Carter Bar.

Exemptions:

  • Emergency vehicles and those involved in roadworks are exempt from these restrictions, ensuring that critical services are not disrupted.

Alternative Routes:

The authorities have considered alternative routes to minimize disruption. It's recommended to plan your journey in advance, allowing extra time for travel.

Duration:

These changes are temporary and will be in effect until August 1, 2025. Regular updates on the progress of the roadworks and any changes to these restrictions will be provided.

For a smooth journey, adhere to the rules, watch for traffic signs, and stay informed about the roadworks in your area. Safe travels!
