New Traffic Restrictions in North East Scotland: What You Need to Know

Starting May 1, 2025, drivers in North East Scotland will encounter a series of temporary road restrictions along key trunk roads due to planned roadworks. These changes, implemented by the Scottish Ministers under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, aim to ensure safety and smooth traffic flow during essential maintenance and upgrades.

Key Details:

  1. Timing and Duration: The restrictions will be effective from May 1, 2025, and are scheduled to conclude on August 1, 2025.

  2. Affected Areas: The measures will impact various sections of the M90/A90/A9000 and A96 trunk roads, notably at junctions including Spurryhillock in Stonehaven, Garron Point, and the Craibstone to Inverness stretch. These roads are vital connections between major cities like Edinburgh, Fraserburgh, and Inverness.

  3. Traffic Restrictions:

    • Road Closures: Certain slip roads will be temporarily closed, requiring motorists to follow diversion signs.
    • No Overtaking Zones: Designated parts of the roads will enforce no overtaking rules, marked by specific traffic signs.
    • Speed Limits: Temporary speed limits will be in place, with some areas restricted to 50 mph and others to 30 mph. Notably, convoy operations will enforce a maximum speed of 10 mph in certain zones to facilitate safe passage through roadwork sections.
  4. Exemptions: Emergency vehicles (fire brigade, ambulance, police, and coastguard) and vehicles involved in the roadworks will be exempt from the prohibitions. Additionally, certain special forces vehicles will also be exempt from speed restrictions.

Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly, allowing extra travel time and following all posted traffic signs. These measures, while temporary, are crucial for maintaining road safety and ensuring the longevity of Scotland's trunk road infrastructure.
